Can Substance Abuse Treatment Facilities Release Information to Authorities?

Question by shelshock: Can substance abuse treatment facilities release information to authorities?
I have a friend wants to get help with a substance abuse problem that she has. She has 4 kids, 3 of which she has lost custody. She wants to attend meetings to get help. However, she is unsure if she should reveal that she has kids, for fear of someone telling social services and thus taking her other kid away. What kind of privacy act is in place for organizations such as NA and AA?

NA and AA do not give out information unless they get an official supeona of some sort…that is not likely to happen unless your friend is a wanted crimminal. The basis of those organizations is that it is supposed to be annoymous. I have known several people that have gone through those type of 12 step programs and it has been of great benefit to many.
