Mexico’s Immigration Laws What Is Your Reaction?

Question by mkj19696566: Mexico’s immigration laws what is your reaction?
Recently Mexican President Calderon has been very outspoken, critical on U.S. Immigration law enforcement efforts and supports Amnesty for all from Mexico residing, working in this nation.

Contrary to popular belief, Mexico has very strict immigration laws which are enforced by every police agency in the country. The Bureau of Immigration can call upon any law enforcement officer to assist in their mission. Citizens from the United States traveling in Mexico without proper documents, work permits or non immigrant visas are subject to arrest as illegal aliens.

The laws regarding foreign national visitors, immigrants, non-citizens are as clear and concise in Mexico as are our own U.S. laws which are considered unenforceable by many politicians in Washington, D.C.

* Reglamento de la Ley General de Poblacion (General Law on Population) in Spanish dated Abril 14 de 2000 Capitulo Quinto –Migracion Seccion 1

Mexico welcomes only foreigners who will be useful to Mexican society:

Foreigners are admitted into Mexico “according to their possibilities of contributing to national progress.”

Immigration officials must “ensure” that “immigrants will be useful elements for the country and that they have the necessary funds for their sustenance” and for their dependents.

Foreigners may be barred from the country if their presence upsets “the equilibrium of the national demographics,” when foreigners are deemed detrimental to “economic or national interests,” when they do not behave like good citizens in their own country, when they have broken Mexican laws, and when “they are not found to be physically or mentally healthy.”

The Secretary of Governance may “suspend or prohibit the admission of foreigners when he determines it to be in the national interest.”

Mexican authorities must keep track of every single person in the country:

Federal, local and municipal police must cooperate with federal immigration authorities upon request to assist in the arrests of illegal immigrants.

A National Population Registry keeps track of “every single individual who comprises the population of the country,” and verifies each individual’s identity.

A national Catalog of Foreigners tracks foreign tourists and immigrants and assigns each individual with a unique tracking number.
Foreigners with fake papers, or who enter the country under false pretenses, may be Imprisoned. Foreigners with fake immigration papers may be fined or imprisoned.

Foreigners who sign government documents “with a signature that is false or different is subject to fine and imprisonment.

Foreigners who fail to obey the rules will be fined, deported, and/or imprisoned as Felons. Foreigners who fail to obey a deportation order are to be punished.

Foreigners who are deported from Mexico and attempt to re-enter the country without authorization can be imprisoned for up to 10 years.

Foreigners who violate the terms of their visa may be sentenced to up to six years in prison . Foreigners who misrepresent the terms of their visa while in Mexico — such as working with out a permit — can also be imprisoned.

Under Mexican law, illegal immigration is a felony. The General Law on Population States…

“A penalty of up to two years in prison and a fine of three hundred to five thousand pesos will be imposed on the foreigner who enters the country illegally.”

Ha! and they expect leniency for their Illegals here in the U.S.???

  • Tyler G says:

    It doesn’t bother me either.

  • truth! says:

Why in the world would an American citizen want to be crossing into Mexico illegally except to hide from the police authorities. In that case let Calderon handle it. Mexico do not have anything that law abiding people would want to make them enter illegally. Duh!

  • rachel t says:

The President of Mexico is such a hypocrite!!
He was just here a couple of weeks ago meeting with the Mayor of Los Angeles asking that ‘we treat illegal immigrants from Mexico better’. What a crock! Of course, the Mayor of L.A. is a tool himself and is the ex-president of Mecha which is an Anti-American racist hate Group. The only way things are ever going to change no matter who the next president of the USA is, To take it upon ourselves to end illegal immigration. City by City. State by State.

  • Shaneladd says:

I wish we had such strong immigration laws, and a president and Congress that demanded our laws be enforced! However, the “Lords of the Senate,” such as McCain, Obama, and Clinton, want to give amnesty to the illegal alien tresspassers. They make me want to vomit.

  • Eleanor R says:

Let’s just make Mexico the next Chernobyl.

  • Razor Jim says:

Yes this is typical of the Mexican government. They can also afford to take care of their people, but choose to send them to us instead.

  • Phonebreaker says:

We should learn a lesson from this, Be as strict as they.

I still say if we want a cheap and easy solution to the illegal immigration problem in this country just take every US border guard of out of the fields and fences and keep them at the gates. You’re probably saying “WHAT!”
Let our Militias take charge of the border in between the gates. Yes, Harsh problems warrant harsh solutions.
America is at war on many fronts and when it comes down to the cold hard dollars and cents involved Illegal immigration just maybe on par, if not more costly than all our other current actions. Our borders, at their present state, are one of the most vulnerable and easily got around obstacles a terrorist, or Illegals at the least, encounter. Don’t believe me? Why do you always hear about Illegals crying for equal treatment or getting a bunch of benefits? You never hear anyone on here saying “damn it sure is hard to get over that border”, or “man it sucks giving all these taxes to Uncle Sam out of my paycheck”
This is the border to our very peoples, our very neighborhoods. Yes the Militias would be brutal, but you set clear rules of conduct. Have you not read the recent reports of illegal ambushing of our guards and drug runners setting traps and explosives? We have to fight back. People might think Yeah right, Rules of Conduct with the Militias, But I tell you there would be Militias lined up for miles willing to honor those rules for the chance to defend our borders. Besides within a couple weeks you’d start seeing a drastic drop in the number of border crossers. We don’t need to supply any weapons, ammo or food. Maybe just some small buildings every so often and I’m sure the Militias will take care of the rest.

One of the MAIN reasons the immigration laws in Mexico are so tough is that A LOT of the immigrants that go to Mexico, only go there to use it as a stepping stone in order to get into the U.S, illegally or otherwise. Getting a Mexican visa is extremely hard to many other Latin Americans for this reason.

The toughness of Mexico’s immigration laws only helps the U.S deal with its illegal immigration problem, and lessens the number that actually go to Mexico only to cross the U.S border illegally. Mexicans are not the only ones crossing the border (though a great majority are), there are many other groups and nationalities that go to Mexico for that exactly purpose.

  • Ana C says:

Most foreigners do not enter Mexico illegally. They just cross the Texas, New Mexico, Arizona or California border to go vacation or shop. Those that do go to Mexico illegally, come from South or Central America, or aboard ships from accross the seas and are on a trek to cross into the US illegally. Not many stay there illegally. Those that do, are the one’s running from the law and believe me if the Mexican Government catches you – you are out of there they will hand you over to the US in a heartbeat. Most illegals south of the border do not want to spend time in one of their prisons so they do not stick around.
And as a point of reference for the person that said Mecha was a radical anti american group, you are mistaken. I was president of my college Mecha (Movimiento Estudiantil Chicanos de Atzlan) and we tried to bring awareness of our culture and heritage and to educate ourselves as to government and politics and programs for the aid of Mexican Americans. My greatest and most proud moment was meeting Cesar Chavez. My most radical moment was having the Brown Berets in my home.

I am all for adopting and implementing the same legislation and enforcement in the US! Put it to a vote of the people!!

  • John says:

Immigration laws in Mexico? What a JOKE? I am so surprised that Mexico has immigration laws. LOL I thought it was a country of lawlessness that is instructing people how to break the law and how to cross the border illegally to the US.

  • billc4u says:

sounds like mexico’s president should practice what he is trying to shove down another country’s throats and reform his laws first before attempting to voice an opinion on another country’s laws, we are not in Mexico but america if we were in Mexico we would probably be shooting illegals

  • Pure & Virgin, MD? says:

I think is a waste of time to focus in other countries immigration policies. We need to fix our first. Making comparisons is childish.
